Family and Consumer Sciences classes have two primary purposes:
1. Develop skills that can be used to add to a postive home environment.
2. Develop skills that can be used in the workplace or to establish a home-based business.

Family and Consumer Sciences and Health

Family Wellness- Personal and Family Life Skills
Family and Consumer Science is committed to keeping strong, healthy families. Today there are many challenges to the individual as well as to the family unit. A teen can contribute to making his/her family stronger as well as understanding the responsibility of herself/himself to leading a healthy lifestyle. The foundation of successful living and healthy lifestyles is studied.

Foods I and Foods II- Kitchen and Food Preparation Basics
The Foods program has been reorganized to better prepare students to continue studying foods as an occupation while developing skills that will enhance one aspect of family living. The Culinary Arts track was established a number of years ago. Any student who would like to do this as preparation for a career in Foods, should talk to me or to the guidance counselor. The curriculum studied is also aligned with Kirkwood Community College's Culinary Arts program. Entry level coursework can be skipped if students are proficient in specific knowledge and food preparation skills. Foods I & II would have to be taken within 12 months of enrolling at Kirkwood.
Foods I establishes knowledge in food basics such as reasons for food choices, a specific food and equipment vocabulary, well-written recipes, culinary related math, efficient food preparation, safety and sanitation, use of food preparation equipment, and other behind the scenes skills of menu-planning, table set-ups, and time management.
Foods II will focus more on preparing foods from the basic 5 food groups so they can be considered a standard product. Application of these skills will be used when studying international foods and more specific nutritional requirements.

Health- Physical, Social, and Mental/Emotional
Health is a subject area that is critical to the well-being of people of all ages each and every day of your entire life. You may choose to go into a health-related occupation or may just be interested in learning about how to make good health choices. An individual's attitudes about healthy behaviors is called wellness. This is an overall goal for all members of this class. The three major areas of study will be physical, social, and mental/emotional health.
Students will have an overview of systems of the body, nutrition and fitness, personal safety, drugs, personal relationships, stress management, and other related areas. This class will be an introduction to the various areas of health for the student who might be considering a health-related occupation, or to the student who likes science-related classes.
