First quarter we study elements of fiction and the structure of non-fiction texts and do a grammar review. We'll also be working on writing skills, especially organization of ideas. Vocabulary work, diction drills, and editing for mechanics continue all semester. |

| English 11 - Theme: The American Dream |
First quarter we examine literature dealing with The American Dream. This involves looking at ideas and attitudes that have shaped our national identity. We identify elements of the American Dream and examine ways the Dream continues to influence our thinking. Contemporary issues such as immigration are examined in their historical contexts. Students read and write a variety of texts. Vocabulary work and editing practice continue throughout the year. |

| English 12- Preparation for College Reading and Writing |
The focus of this quarter is on reading non-fiction, evaluation of source materials, writing academic papers, and making presentations. The goal is for students to become more independent learners as they hone their skills in preparation for college work. There is strong emphasis on independent thinking and defense of ideas. Vocabulary work and editing practice are ongoing. |

| Practical Comunication- Thinking About Skills and Jobs |
This class deals with preparation for the workplace. Content includes listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills that will be useful in vocational training programs, on the job, and in everyday life.
The first quarter includes setting goals, planning for independent living, and using communication skills to get a job. We work on the fundamental skills and competencies required of 21st century workers. |
